The 3-acre veganic farm at Animal Place works in conjunction with the sanctuary to bring awareness about how food is produced to local school children, their families, and the general public through hands-on education, public speaking and healthy produce. Out of respect for the non-human animals at the sanctuary and animals everywhere, we do not use any animal byproducts on the farm. Our farm also serves as a working proof-of-concept that domesticated animals are not necessary to grow food, and demonstrates the efficiency and environmental benefits of farming organically with inputs that are plant-based.
In 2013, we will offer our first CSA membership program to the community. We also sell to vegan and vegetarian restaurants, our local natural foods co-op and special events. As a farm partner in the national Farm to School program, we stock an after-school veggie cart for a local elementary school, making healthy, whole foods accessible to children and their families for free or by donation. This spring, the children will visit the farm for hands-on learning activities on the farm and, of course, to meet our resident animal ambassadors.
